Orissa Govt plans to develop 5000 affordable houses

Orissa government will develop 5000 affordable housing units in Bhubaneswar. The state government plans to launch the scheme in collaboration with the city-based developers.

BHUBANESWAR: The capital city of Orissa is now witnessing an increased demand for affordable homes. As the city is growing fast; providing better job opportunities, there is a better flow of population to the city now.

The property prices are shooting up. The city has become unaffordable to the majority of the people who live in the city now. This situation prompted the government to develop some affordable homes.

In the first phase of Affordable Urban Housing in Odisha-2012, 5000 housing units will be developed in Bhubaneswar. Once the projects are completed here, the scheme will be extended to other cities.

Speaking about the government scheme, the state secretary for housing and urban development Injeti Srinivas said that the scheme will be done with the collaboration of the developers.

Affordable housing units will be developed at Gothapatna. Once the projects are completed the government will make sure that the locality is well connected to the city. Infrastructure will be made better. Connecting roads also will be developed. This will provide easier access to the city from Gothapatna.

Orissa government has reserved around 100 acre of land for the project. 15 to 20 acres will be handed over to the developers for developing affordable housing projects.

Developers will be free to use one fourth of the total land. They will have to develop affordable homes in 75% of the land. The scheme mainly aims at providing homes for the people who fall under the EWS and LIG categories.

Under the revised scheme of Orissa Government, people with monthly income of less than Rs.7500 will be falling in the economically weaker section. People with income from Rs.7501 to Rs.15000 will be falling in the lower income group.
